All You Need to Know About Upper Steering Shaft
What is an Upper Steering Shaft?
- An upper steering shaft also referred to as an upper intermediate shaft, is a component used in vehicles with rack-and-pinion steering systems.
- This part connects the upper end of the steering column to the pinion gear on the steering rack.
- The upper steering shaft allows for smooth power transfer from the steering wheel to the wheels. When this part is worn out, it can cause vibration from the steering wheel and a decrease in response time when turning.
- It is recommended to check the upper steering shaft for excessive wear and tear regularly, as it can lead to dangerous driving scenarios if left unchecked.
- Replacing an upper steering shaft at the first sign of issues is essential for vehicle safety.

- Step 1: The steering wheel is rotated.
- Step 2: The torque sensor senses a torque signal, which is then processed by the ECU.
- Step 3: The ECU supplies an electric current to the motor based on the torque signal and the speed of the vehicle.
- Step 4: The motor's rotational torque is amplified by the reduction gear, before being sent to the pinion.
- Step 5: The torque generated by the pinion on the power-assist side (supplemental steering torque), as well as the torque from the pinion on the steering wheel side (steering rotating torque), is converted into a rack axial force to control tire direction.
What does the Upper Steering Shaft Use for?
- The upper steering shaft is a component of the steering system in automobiles which transmits torque from the steering wheel to the steering gear. It also serves as a form of support for the steering column, connecting it to other components in the vehicle.
- This helps ensure that there is minimal vibration or noise when turning the wheel, providing an optimal driving experience.
- Additionally, upper steering shafts are designed to absorb shock and protect other steering system components from damage. As such, upper steering shafts play a vital role in the safe operation of cars and trucks.
- It is important to maintain upper steering shafts in good condition and replace them when necessary, as they are integral parts of the overall vehicle’s performance.
What Parts Make Up the Upper Steering Shaft?
The following is a list of standard upper steering shaft components and the materials typically used for each element.
01. Spline yoke – Usually, the head bore has splines to connect other parts, and the material is 45#.
02. Universal joint – It is one of the essential parts of the upper steering shaft. It provides a flexible mechanical connection between two parts, allowing them to move around each other while transmitting torque. This connection creates a more efficient and reliable power transfer over an extended distance than traditional rigid methods.
- The body material is 20Cr; roughs are usually forged or cold extruded.
- The needle-bearing material is GCr15.
- The bearing cup material is 20#.
- The oil seal material is NBR.
- The snap spring material is 65Mn.
03. Weld yoke – Welded yoke bore splines are mated to the intermediate shaft and welded together after a tight mating connection. Usually, the material is 45#.
04. Intermediate shaft – Usually, the material is 40Cr.
05. Corrugated tube – It can play a cushioning role. Usually, the material is 20#.
06. Spline shaft – It is connected to another component in the steering system, and its spline parameters are adapted to the connected component. Usually, the material is 40Cr. There are four basic types of steering shafts. Splined shafts and “Double D” shafts are the most common. Some vehicles use a smooth shaft. Newer Ford vehicles use a V-shaped shaft.

What Are The Types of Upper Steering Shafts?
Stamped Steel Upper Steering Shaft
Stamped yokes are generally used for small displacements of passenger cars like Hyundai, Kia, Renault, Fiat, Peugeot, and forklifts.
Because they have low torque requirements, and the products are simple in structure, light in weight, and low in cost.
Forged Steel Upper Steering Shaft
Forged yokes are the most widely used in automotive and truck steering shafts.
Because it has the highest material density, the best torque performance, is wear-resistant and durable, and is not easy to deform, this yoke will generally be used in middle and high-end passenger cars, SUVs, trucks, and agricultural machinery.
Casting Steel Upper Steering Shaft
Casting yoke material density and performance can not be compared with forging yoke, but in the shape of the yoke, casting has more advantages than forging; casting can make a variety of shapes, not limited by the shape. But sometimes, the surface of the casted yoke will have air holes and sand holes.
So it is generally used for American cars, like Jeep, Ford, Lincoln, Dodge, Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, Chrysler, Hummer, GM, etc.
Extruded Steel Upper Steering Shaft
It is divided into two kinds of warm extrusion and cold extrusion; the surface of this kind of yoke is smooth, beautiful appearance, material density, and use performance are higher, so it now more and more popular.
These yokes are mainly used in small cars because their torque cannot be compared with forged and cast yokes.
How Many Types of Surface Treatment for Upper Steering Shafts?
Paint Spraying
Painting is the most common surface treatment for steering shafts, as it is not limited by color and can be sprayed in various colors.
However, the surface adhesion of spray paint is not strong enough, and it is easy to scratch when encountering knocks. We add a baking process according to this characteristic, which can increase the adhesion of the spray paint surface, and can effectively solve this problem.
Electrophoresis
Electrodeposition is characterized by strong adhesion, a smooth and shiny surface, and not easy to scratch when bumped.
But it can only do black; no other color options.
And because the product needs to be over-acidic during the electrophoresis process, this leads to easy rusting inside the tube.
Neutral Color
Neutral color is not used much in the upper steering shaft; although the product’s surface is coated with anti-rust oil before leaving the factory, the anti-rust time is not long.
Zinc-nickel Alloy
Zinc-nickel alloy finish is rarely used on the steering shaft because of its high cost, but the color of the outer tube looks very advanced, and only Audi’s steering shaft is known to use this finish.
Phosphorization
The color after phosphating is the same as the neutral color; the only difference is that after doing the phosphating treatment, there will be a layer of anti-rust material on the product’s surface, which can greatly reduce the rusting of the product.
Galvanized
The galvanized steering shaft is not used much, currently only in the Land Rover useful for such products. The surface is bright and beautiful, and the rust prevention is powerful.
How to See The Upper Steering Shaft Quality?
1. Check the appearance
Check the surface treatment for defects, bumps, or rust, then check the finish of the machined surface.
2. Check the burrs
Check the screw holes and keyways for uncleaned burrs, and this detail is something many small factories will overlook.
3. Check the universal joint
Check whether the universal joint oil seal has ruptured; the universal joint is one of the essential parts of the upper steering shaft; if the oil seal ruptures, it will lead to the overflow of lubricating grease inside the bearing cup and the dirt and dust outside into the universal joint, which will lead to the life of the universal joint is significantly shortened.
4. Turning universal joint
Check whether the rotation is smooth; if there is a jam, the steering shaft will have a strange sound in the process of use; feel whether there is a gap in the universal joint during the rotation Universal joint if there is a gap, the steering wheel will have a gap after the product is installed, which will affect the precision of the steering wheel rotation, resulting in increased driving danger.
5. Check the telescoping function
With the telescopic steering shaft to do axial stretching to see whether the expansion and contraction are smooth, if the extension has a jam, it will affect the product’s performance after installation.
6. Check the clearance
The steering shaft with telescoping also has to do the lateral clearance test; the spline shaft and shaft tube will be twisted backward by hand to see if there is a gap. Average clearance needs to be less than 0.03mm, such as too much clearance, the product will have a strange noise after installation and will affect the precision of the steering wheel rotation.
7. Check the length
Measure the correct length of the product, and for steering shafts with telescoping, measure the right length in tension and compression.
8. Check the dimensions
Measure the mounting position dimensions, including the diameter of the inner and outer spline, the number of teeth, the spline parameters, and the angle of the mounting position at both ends are correct.
9. Check the welding
Check whether the weld is solid, there is no crack or false welding, and the upper steering shaft is a safety part; if welding problems, the use of safety accidents.
10. Check the rubber parts
Check whether the rubber parts are broken.
11. Check other accessories
Check whether other accessories are complete, such as screws, nuts, gaskets, and other accessories.
